Removing color does remove one of the elements people use to distinguish icons. However, relying on color for icons to be distinguishable is a questionable UI design strategy because it relies on users having good color acuity.
Here are some of our old Neocom icons, viewed up-close. I hope you'll agree that these designs are too busy to distinguish by outline and carry virtually no semantic meaning. This is one major issue the new UI icons were intended to address.

Please keep the feedback coming, though. If you tremendously prefer the old icons, please explain why, so that even if they don't return, your input can help us shape future iteration.
Edit: I should clarify that I am not involved in the UI design effort, but I do have some background in UI design and wanted to communicate some of the thought process behind the changes that would be familiar to human interface designers.

Technically speaking, the black levels look too high - like a bad transfer from old NTSC video.
I spent some time last night going through all the nebula maps and identifying several regions' nebulae that are problematic for UI interaction. This list has been passed along to the right people.
As far as black levels, please submit a bug report and include a screen shot. You can add my name to the bug report and I will take a look.
I certainly have not seen black level issues of any kind with our nebula maps, and I do know what to look for, but a picture would help me recognize what you're identifying as that.
